Files
Files come up in three ways: files you attach to a message, files that agents create or save while they work, and an agent's own file storage, where it keeps files between chats.
Attaching files
Add files to a message from the attach menu next to the message box, by pasting them, or by dragging them onto the chat. In the desktop app you can also drop files from the Finder.
You can attach up to five files per message, each up to 10 MB. Which kinds of file a chat takes depends on its model:
- Images (PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, HEIF, BMP and TIFF) on models with image input.
- PDF files on models with PDF input.
- Spreadsheets (
.xlsx,.xls,.csv), Word documents (.docx) and PowerPoint presentations (.pptx) on models with the built-in document skills.
The attach menu only offers what the chat's model can take. A file that cannot be attached is named with the reason, and the other files are still attached.
Files in chats
Files show up in a chat as chips: the files an agent creates, the files a tool saves (for example an email attachment or a downloaded Drive file) and the files you attach. Each chip lets you download the file or, in the web app, preview it without leaving the chat.
Previews open in a panel on the right. Drag its left edge to change the width, maximize it to fill the page, and close it when you are done. These files can be previewed:
| Kind | File types |
|---|---|
.pdf | |
| Word | .docx |
| Spreadsheets | .xlsx, .xls, .csv |
| PowerPoint | .pptx |
PowerPoint previews are an approximation of the original layout. Other files, and very large ones, can be downloaded. In the mobile app, tapping a file downloads it and opens the share sheet, so you can save it or open it in another app.
Agent file storage
With the Agent File Storage capability on, an agent has a place to keep files between chats: reports it writes, attachments it saved from emails, images it generated, and files you give it. It can read, write and organize them in folders.
To see an agent's files, open the agent and choose Files. Each file can be previewed or downloaded, and files and folders can be deleted.
To give an agent files, choose Upload files or drop files onto the list. Each file can be up to 25 MB:
- images and PDF files,
- spreadsheets, Word and PowerPoint files (
.xlsx,.xls,.csv,.docx,.pptx), - text and data files (
.txt,.md,.json,.xml,.yaml,.tsv).
Everyone in the organization can see and download an agent's files. Uploading and deleting needs the Editor or Admin role.
To point the agent at a particular file, type @ in a chat with the agent or in its instructions and pick the file.
Which file actions the agent may take, and which of them need your approval, is set with the settings button of Agent File Storage in Agent Settings.
